Research & Planning

Rationale

The brief given was to create a front cover, contents page and a double page spread of a music magazine with the genre of my own choice; "pop", focusing on the sub-genre of Pop - rock the main genre of pop which has the general conventions of pop music but the sound of rock is also heard when listening to this type of music but in a more softer tone.

My target Audience would range from the ages of teenagers (13 - 19) as the main readers of my magazine and would be laid out as a more clear view of thesub-genre with the main photograph having an artist hold a guitar and look towards the camera; at the readers on the magazine. To find out more about the sub-genre, I will be conducting research on the context of Pop-rock and look at magazine covers of the music in this genre. To attract the specific target audience, I would take out the fonts and styles that similar magazines use and incorporate them with my own ideas.

The name of the magazine should be short, snappy and popular so that the readers would get accustomed to it and so attracted to the ideas behind the magazine, the name would also need to link with the iconography of the genre such as "Guitars".

The idea that I am more likely to use are:

POP ROCK - the name itself identifies the genre towards readers easily and only needs to have an attractive font which would bring the audience to see more of the magazine

POP N ROCK - instead of using Pop and lock which is a dance move, this name is more likely to be as catchy since it is a short and fun phrase to say therefore fits the likes of Pop rock fans.

My Front cover photograph would have the artist holding an electric guitar, striking a pose in a mid - shot which would suggest the love of music brings out the true sounds of music with smaller images which would give hints of the inside contents of the magazine. I would be taking ideas from such magazines as NME so that I can adopt the style they use but also give my work; my own touch. A range of fonts and sizes will be used since colours from the pop and rock genres can be used to complement each other in the eyes of the readers.

An article interviewing the artist chosen would appear in the double page spread which would provide information of some personal and career wise stories so that the readers would feel a sense of knowing the person (artist) a lot more. I may also add a small survey questionnaire such as a poll about a specific artist or topic linked with Pop - rock to make the readers more involved with the magazine.

Overall, I think that my music magazine would succeed and probably fit in on the shelves with other Pop-rock magazines since it would contain similar context to the popular ones and would welcome the fans of the sub-genre since the styles, colours and font used will be that of the main and include the parts I think that main magazines are missing on their covers today.

Questionnaire

Twenty people participated in this questionnaire, they were all in the age range of teenagers - 13-19 as this is the magazines target audience and so the right information is obtained which gives a better customer satisfaction. Here are some of the answers from the sample.

This shows that not as much participants of the sample do not read music magazines suggesting that it is less popular within the area of participants
This shows us that secondary colours are associated within the sample, however it doesn't mean that I shouldn't use primary colours, just not as much
The sample size have suggested a more 'value' priced magazine as £0 - £3 has been chosen by the majority
